The EIGHT REST Every note must have a rest of the same value, and here is the eight rest, looks like the number seven.

The EIGHT NOTES last half a count. You can see an eight note

like this; or like this they last the same. When you write more than just one eight note, you usually have to put them in groups. If you see the next picture you see eight notes in each measure, the first measure has 4 groups of 2 notes each group. The second measure has 2 groups of 4 notes each group.
